Sight Lines & Vestibules

Well-crafted sight lines are what distinguish great architecture and interior design from the mediocre. They aren’t easy to craft either, which makes them all the more rewarding when executed successfully. A sight line is the line of vision you perceive when standing in a particular spot within a home. Often the view encompasses multiple rooms, and therefore the design scheme for each space must be considered in relation to the others.

Camp Bluebird has a semi-open concept floorplan. Cased openings define the living room, dining room, and kitchen. These common spaces are flanked by colorful vestibules (a hall or small room containing a doorway to the exterior) that lead to more private rooms such as the mudroom and the main suite. This layout provides the opportunity for some brilliant architectural views and our architect did not let them go wasted. Throughout Camp Bluebird, features such as decorative moulding, an interior transom, and well-placed doorways work in harmony to cast brilliant sight lines. We carefully selected interior finishes and furnishings to enhance these architectural moments.

One of the most exciting points in our building process was watching these sight lines slowly reveal themselves. A memorable moment was when the wallpaper was installed in the south vestibule that leads to the outdoor grill and courtyard. On the north side of the home the view from the living room into the main bedroom is comprised of four different paint colors that complement the layers of decorative paneling, millwork and trim.

Sight lines aren’t just about what can be seen, but they also pertain to what it is hidden. The kitchen sink at Camp Bluebird is cleverly concealed around the corner from the dining and living room. At Bobo Workshop, our idea of luxury isn’t excess space. It’s well-crafted interior views that mean you don’t have to see the dirty dishes until it’s time to clean up.
